MICHAEL D. PUGH
Michael D. Pugh has over thirty years of CEO experience in hospitals, health care systems, managed care organizations, consulting and health care technology companies.
Mr. Pugh is an internationally known advisor and consultant to health care providers, payer, trade associations, technology companies and government organizations. He is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Colorado Denver Business School Health Administration Program, an Instructor in the Mt. Sinai Medical School Health Care Leadership Program and a Senior Faculty member for the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI). Currently Mr. Pugh serves as the Vice Chair of the IHI Leadership Faculty. Mr. Pugh is the author of numerous articles and book chapters and is a co-author of the IHI white paper “High Impact Leadership: Improve Care, Improve the Health of Populations, and Reduce Costs” and the highly popular IHI white paper, “Seven Leadership Leverage Points for Organization-Level Improvement in Healthcare.”
Since 1998 Mr. Pugh has focused his consulting and advisory practice on helping senior leaders define and execute strategies for improvement and organizational transformation. Specific areas of expertise include strategy, clinical integration, quality systems, quality measurement, technology, governance, leadership system development and strategic planning.
In addition to his consulting practice, from 2004-2011 Mr. Pugh served as the CEO during the start-up and growth phases of a national health information technology (HIT) company, Verisma Systems, Inc.
Mr. Pugh has been active in health care leadership and has served on the boards of the American Hospital Association, the AHA Health Forum, the Joint Commission and the Colorado Hospital Association. He is a frequent speaker at regional and national conferences on subjects of leadership, governance, strategy and quality.
Mr. Pugh holds a B.S. and an M.P.H. in Health Care Administration from Tulane University, New Orleans, Louisiana and is the author of multiple articles and book chapters on quality and governance. He resides in Southern Colorado where he can pursue his passions of fly fishing, mountain biking and skiing.

Health care governance is increasing complex. Presentations are generally made in the context of the changing health care landscape and what moving from Volume to Value really means health care delivery organizations. Presentations focus on the role of the board, the board’s responsibility for quality, safety and performance, best practices, improving governance performance and the board and its role in strategy.
Michael Pugh is the co-author of the IHI paper High-Impact Leadership for Improvement and Innovation and is a frequent speaker on the topic of leadership and the role of leaders at all levels of the organization. He brings his over thirty-five years of CEO experience in health care organizations to his presentations and helps leaders at all levels better understand how their behaviors shape culture and how leaders create vision and change in their organizations.
Michael Pugh teaches health care strategy in the Mt. Sinai (NY) School of Medicine Master of Health Care Leadership Program. He is well versed in speaking about health care reform, population health and the changes that are occurring (or not occurring as expected) across health care. In his presentations, he is able to convey the importance of strategic thinking is the changing health care environment and simply identify why strategy works and why it fails.
