Ernest R. Sutton is the managing member of the Sutton Group, L.L.C., specializing in healthcare governance, leadership development and diversity awareness, to hospitals and other for profit and non-profit organizations. He has spent over 20 years working with Boards and Senior Managers on strategic planning, organizational development, diversity awareness, and physician relationships within various hospitals and governance arenas. He is a former chairman of the Albemarle Hospital Board Authority, in Elizabeth City, North Carolina and was a strategic leader during Albemarle Hospitals' transition from a county owned hospital to a freestanding regional hospital board authority. He has led efforts to provide diversity to hospital trustee boards and has been active with state hospital associations and the American Hospital Association. Ernest is a current member of the National Board of Advisors, Center for Healthcare Governance, and formerly chaired the Committee on Governance (COG) and the Leadership Development Committee of the American Hospital Association. He is also a current member of the Trustee Leadership Network (TLN).

The American Hospital Association Trustee Magazine and Bridges Magazine of Institute for Diversity featured Mr. Sutton for his work as a trustee. He is Silver, Gold and Platinum Gavel award recipient, from the former Governance Institute of Physicians and Executives in LaJolla, California. He is also recipient of the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the highest award bestowed on a citizen by the State of North Carolina. He recently was a speaker for the investiture service of, Mr. Rick de Filippi, the current chairman of the Board of the American Hospital Association.

Mr. Sutton is a visionary and foreword thinking healthcare advocacy professional that was active in his local community and at the national level, garnering stakeholder input during the recent healthcare reform debate that was critical to community involvement and education. He served as co-chair of the Healthcare Reform Action sub committee of the Elizabeth City, Pasquotank County, Community Relations Commission.

Ernest is retired from The North Carolina Department of Correction as a Senior Level Administrator, following 36 years of service. Most recently, Mr. Sutton is an appointed member of the Elizabeth City State University Board of Trustees, in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, which is his Alma Mater from which he earned a Bachelors degree in Political Science, and served as president of its professional organization. In addition, he is a member of The Elizabeth City State University Foundation.

He has been a featured speaker in several states, to include North Carolina, Virginia, Arizona, Tennessee, and Illinois and is often called upon by governmental and private sector leaders for his insightful views and opinions on a diverse range of topics.
