Working Better Together: Using Teamwork to Multiply Our Actions
Medical errors are the third leading cause of death in the United States. According to the Joint Commission 79% of those errors are caused by human factors issues and failures in communication and leadership. Coming together as a team has been shown to improve communication, make leadership a shared experience, and provide everyone with the situational awareness and mutual support they need to catch errors before they occur. Team training, specifically TeamSTEPPS® can help you and your team work better together.
In this presentation Chris Hund, director of AHA’s Team Training, will discuss practical ways of taking your team of experts and making them into an expert team. Teaming shouldn’t be considered yet another initiative. Instead, it should be thought of as a tool in your toolbox to tackle any challenge. While providing the essentials of TeamSTEPPS, Chris can make connections to what is important to your organization. He can provide a basic discussion on TeamSTEPPS or a workshop to help your organization get started on their journey to safer care. Other specific presentations can include:
- How TeamSTEPPS can practically support your efforts to becoming a highly reliable organization. The tools can be specifically connected to the main elements of what it takes to become a HRO.
- How patients and families can learn these tools to be on the same page and learn the same language as the patient care team. This makes them not only engaged, but actually teammates in care.
- How simple, low-resource games can be used to create affordable, quick, and effective training in teamwork.
- How different change management models can be blended to make teamwork last.
All of these sessions are highly interactive and can be tailored to the needs of your organization.
